I have been singing most of my life. I sang with my mom and sister in church when I was around 9 or 10 and I haven't stopped singing :) I was in choir in elementary school, high school, college and even went on to work on getting a major in music.
I think that singing has been a way God gives me to express myself. I was always shy and still am to a great extent, although He has worked on me in that area. It was easier to sing my feelings than to say them.
Since this post is just about singing ….I will try not to digress too much :)
Singing is the main way I am able to express my emotions. If I am happy, I sing. If I am excited, I sing. If I am sad, I sing. If I don't know what to do, I sing. It is hard to not be able to sing the way I want to at times. But I have a reason to sing…and that is to praise my God for all His blessings and for all He is to me. Singing is not just about form to me…it is about the heart.
There are so many exhortations to sing in the Word of God. How can I not sing? But more than being told to sing…it comes naturally because of the thankfulness in my heart for what Jesus Christ has given me. I am getting older and every morning when I wake up I think , “Wow! Okay, Lord, You gave me another day!”
The songs that my family sing with me in church are not just me leading them to sing…we are singing to each other as well as to God. We are reminding each other of the hope, of the joy, of the resurrection, of God's forgiveness and grace. It is good to the ears to hear these things.
Sometimes I don't have the words to say what is in my heart. The Bible says “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God's people in accordance with the will of God.”
Not all of my songs are prayers, but many of them are. So singing is important to me because it is one way I communicate with others, worship my God, and express my thoughts.
That is just a bit of background :) If I sang about it, it would probably be better than me just typing about it :)
